// I hope this is a post topic suitable for this subreddit, and I'd like to hear other people's thoughts around this.
I'm in a phase of life where I'm trying to land my first proper full-time job, that is, soon to be graduate looking for degree-relevant position. I've had full-time jobs before in the period between high school and undergraduate (4 year break).
In this job seeking process, I've noticed that it seems to be an increasing trend to offer, or in many cases even require a video version of your CV in the first application round(s), or a video interview where you respond to a pre-recorded interviewer's questions. This is completely different from my experience applying for jobs 9-10 years ago when I was straight out of high school. Back then, I'd typically submit my resume and cover letter and then either have a telephone interview or be called in for a face to face meeting.
I can understand that with technology being so widespread now, it's tempting for companies to utilise it to streamline and make their recruitment both more efficient and effective (?).
However, video interviews slowly seems to become the norm even for positions that are not necessarily a good match for the typical outgoing extrovert type of person. Like back office positions or jobs requiring immersion and deep focus.
Personally, I will be inclined not to apply for a position if it requires a video interview because talking to a camera in response to pre-recorded questions is extremely weird. I had to do it for my last internship in a huge GF500 company, and I have honestly never felt more awkward. It was a million times worse than a traditional interview.
This made me think, why has this become a trend, is it well thought through or is it just "using it because we can"? Is it wise in the sense that it might make the recruiter miss out on a substantial group of potential applicants?
What are your opinions? Are you seeing this trend as well?
