So I applied for two jobs in the same company, essentially the same position, same job title. The only difference is the hours (day vs night shift), and the population I’d be working with, so less stress overall for the second position I applied for.
I ended up having an interview (that I thought was for the preferred position), but ended up being for the overall more stressful with worse hours position, that I had applied for before the second one I want. I would never have applied for it if I saw the second one, which was posted a week later than the first.
I got a email asking for references, saying they were proceeding with my application for the night shift, which I don’t want. When I expressed my interest in the day shift during the interview (because I explained it was the one I thought I was being interview for), they said they would “make a note of it” and they would “handle it”.
Do I continue with this job’s application process, or will that result in them disregarding my application for the preferred one? Will the refusal of this one negatively impact their position on me interviewing for the other job, (she can just take this one, she wasted our time, ect?) Do I call HR? I also know they haven’t started interviewing for the day shift position yet, as I have a friend within the company. Should I refuse this offer and take my chances with getting an interview for the second one? That’s what I would like to do, I really think this is the perfect position for me and I don’t know when another position like it will ever open up in this company. I have technically nothing to lose but the first job offer, but it is a highly stressful, undesirable position I was willing to put myself in, solely so that I could try to get a position like the one that’s currently posted.
