I just recently moved to Virginia with my best friend, in order to get away from toxic family, since we live together and I don’t have a license or car we decide I could work with him doing HVAC, which sounded interesting to me because I’m usually a quick learner and he enjoys it highly. The company we work for is very small, and very cheap, my first day here they told me I was on “workplace probation” I was supposed to start out being paid $10 an hour with a possible raise in thee months, but I’m probation I make $8 and hour with no taxes. So I’m basically getting paid under the table, I wasn’t worried at first because I figured I needed to prove myself, that was at the end of October when I started, now almost three months later I constantly get called out because “they can afford to have me work everyday” then when I do get to work they put me down and bitch that I know nothing, while teaching me nothing always having me do simple tasks or things I’ve already learned.
Every time I mention getting off probation he simply tells me prove that I’m worth, which I think is stupid because I have several times gone out of my way to try and stay late, or volunteer to help with whatever, I ask questions constantly and I’m always trying to learn, to no avail of course. My biggest problem here is that I may soon get fired, due to them apparently not liking me or “my work” which according to the builders who have worked with this company for a long time say it’s probably because they are racist and have only ever had one black guy working for them. I wanna leave and get another job it doesn’t matter what job, but the problem is we live in the middle of nowhere in Virginia, the closest thing to me is a 7-11 that’s about 6 miles away, and I don’t have a car, my friend since we work together takes me every morning, he wouldn’t be able to take me anywhere due to the work schedule, and him actually getting 40 hours a week. I feel so stuck, and I wanna get out this predicament I can’t get a license due to never being taught how to drive, my friend is always too busy, the closest driving school is an hour away, and there’s no one else I know around here that could. I barely make it each month with bills due to the hours I’m getting. I’m lost and don’t know what my options are, any advice is appreciated.
