I just had my first day of work at my new job and things just don’t seem to be matching up with what I was originally told. When offered the job I was told it was part time (which I need as a FT pre-med student in my senior year) and they have me on the schedule for almost 50 hours. I was offered one position on paperwork and then told to do something else entirely. The girl who was supposed to train me was sent home two hours into my first 8 hour shift and I was pretty much on my own. The hours go much later than what was agreed on and the shifts often interfere with the times I want to be home with my fiancé, studying, and even sleeping (some shifts run late into the night like 1am).
All in all, it just seems like the expectations are too far from what I need and I’m going to keep looking for a job that fits better. I have enough in savings to last me a couple months, but I also don’t want to make a mistake and leave a job and then not be able to find another one. At the same time though, I found this one within a week or my search. I guess it could have just been luck, however I’d like to think that I have a good resume and references.
Should I stay to give it more time to see if I start to like it more and can work out the differences? Should I leave because things are just too different from what I need? I know I can ask my supervisor to be more accommodating, but I just think there’s too much going against what I need and was originally told to really make the job work.
I also want to be respectful of the company and don’t want to lead them on or waste their time. I just wish they’d been more clear or honest with me on what they really needed from me. I would have turned down the position if I knew what would actually be asked of me.
