My new employee makes the same amount as I do. Help?

Hi guys, sorry if this is the wrong place to post this. I’m just looking for some strong advice on how to handle my situation.

I am the manager of a privately owned(authorized retailer) of a corporation. I run the store with 3 employees under me. We hired a new employee who just started this week. He has a background in our department, which means that they pay him accordingly. I have no record of my employees payroll or salary, only the owner (my boss) does. I make $11 an hour plus commission as manager, but I found out today that he does, too. I know I shouldn’t have, but just out of curiosity, I asked the new guy how much he made. He makes $11 an hour plus commission as well.

I’m hesitant to go to my boss and ask him for a raise because I found out this information the very, very wrong way. It was a moment of curiosity and impulsiveness. I’m clueless as to how to bring this up to my boss, as I can’t tell him that I found out by asking.

Am I totally screwed here? How can I ask him for a raise without telling him that I inappropriately asked my new employee for his salary?
