Is this Legal?

I was hired at 711 a month ago and worked a full 8 hour shift. The next day I politely told them it wasn't for me and apologized for any inconvenience. It was supposed to be training because I wasn't officially on the payroll yet and I did so well on the register that the Manager had me work a full shift my first day.

Fast forward a month later and I never received a check in the mail or any notice that I would be paid. Did they exploit a loophole or is this Illegal? I'm from the USA.
