So if anyone doesn’t recognises my name, I’m a MSc graduate of Cognitive Neuroscience, with the grand scheme of moving forward to become a Research Assistant, or doing a PhD and then moving into Research.
Hitch is... I’ve been graduated for 4-5 months now, and haven’t been able to secure a job in my area. I have had to move back in with my mother (which is difficult to say the least), and am fast losing hope of ever being employed in my area... or actually ever being employed at all.
Obviously I am aware I am at a low point which effects my outlook on my prospects. But I’m struggling to even find full time minimum wage work.
My plan is: (due to my dwindling mental state from being isolated and losing money fast at home)
Move back into London on a minimum wage job. At least then I will be closer to friends and have more autonomy over my life, as well as gaining the ability to network and involve myself in voluntary work to improve my skills and help my Research CV. From there keep applying for PhD positions and Research positions.
But I feel like I can’t even get minimum wage work, despite having retail experience (2 years retail experience, and I was one of their best). I’ve sent out 15 applications in the last week and have still not heard anything.
I live in England. Does anyone have any advice on what minimum wage jobs/company’s that I could apply for and the process I should take to do so? Such as Starbucks; I have applied to several of their stores that are currently taking applications, and some people on the internet say that it is worth calling each store individually to let them know I have applied, or they won’t even realise I’ve applied. Or the fact that I am not currently living in the city, will employers pass me up because I’m not there right now? (I could literally move back tomorrow if I had a job though)
I am even considering other options, such as becoming a special needs teaching assistant for a while or working in the health service.
Unfortunately nothing I have done expect an A level (Grade: B) in business studies makes me suited to office work. Is reception/admin work off the table for me as I don’t have experience?
TDLR: I need serious advice on finding minimum wage work fast (London has an abundance of jobs, it is difficult to know where to look and how to search) Any advice on where I can post this to get more advice would be welcome!
