Don't know where else to leave this, but definitely wanna post.

So I just finished up a seasonal job over at Zumiez.

Where to begin

For starters, let's jump straight into the fact that they had no form of formal training. It was more of a work til you learn the job. I usually don't mind this, since it kind of challenges you to want to know where everything is, how stuff works, etc. but holy shit. It was literally "can you grab ____ for me in a size 7?" which would then lead to me running around asking about 3 coworkers what they were asking for and where an item was located, which about 1/2 the time was in the wrong section and not where it was supposed to be.

Anyways, that was just the start. Alright, I survived, it was annoying as fuck, but I survived. Now we get to the whole idea of selling. As much of a laidback store and environment it appears to be, you are constantly being pressured by managers to make sales, constantly being told where you're at money-wise, unit-wise, and pretty much being watched the whole time. Again, I dealt with it. I was annoyed feeling like my every move was being watched, but I put up with it.

Might as well bring up the fact that there are no cameras either. AKA, employees are also responsible for any theft and suspicious activity going on. It's a fucking retail job at a shit store. I really don't care if someone walks out with something. It's not money out of my pocket and I can guarantee with the overpriced shit they sell, it's not making a dent to the company either. I'm also not gonna risk getting hurt or something over an article of clothing or a hat, but hey. Managers always made sure to tell you to keep an eye out and to let you know when someone was stealing :)

I'll never get over the time a manager pretty much made a comment about me right in front of me because I took "too long" to grab a shoe from the back (literally walked back there, made sure it was the right model and size, and walked out lol, Probably took like a min or two.) Hand the shoe off to the manager just to hear her talking to another employee and go "you ever get impatient for somebody?" If it were really such an intense sale I'm sure you could've grabbed it yourself. Felt pretty fucking annoyed too when this same manager came back to me with the shoes a second later and tried to whisper to me and say, "my customer left because you took too long. Try to be faster with the shoes because now I just lost a sale." You know what though, since everyone is assigned to their "zones" so that the cashiers know who to give a sale too, maybe they couldn't have gotten it themselves. More on that later.

Actually, let's bring it up now. Zones are probably the most annoying part of the store. Let's say a customer wants something from my side and I help them out. Great, everything's done, but now, they might want a shirt from the other wall in the store. Rather than be a normal employee and walk them over and continue helping them the same way I have been for the past few mins, I am supposed to send them over to the worker in that "zone." Cool I guess, whatever. Never really bothered me, except for when a worker would lowkey get mad that you might be stealing their sale and constantly say "hey, next time they want something over here, just send them to me."

Can't forget the time a friend came into the store and I killed my last 10 mins showing him some brands and just talking normally. Had a manager come up to me and say "that your friend? you know you've been talking to him for 20 mins? I stole pretty much all your sales. That's money that could've been in your pocket. You're not in trouble, I'm just letting you know." Really lmao. To earn commission, you need to sell a minimum of $100 I believe? Might be off. Either way, I really don't think it was money out of my pocket if you happened to help someone with a sale tee, or a $30 shirt. I really don't think that affected me so much.

Dealt with a mess of a store, unorganized shoes, and some of the worst managers I've ever had the experience of working with.

However, here's where it gets good.

Last day. Last shift. Closing. 5pm-11pm. Light right outside the mall doesn't change. End up walking into the store at 5:06, and I know that for a fact because I checked my phone right before I walked in.

Proceed to walk in, have the one manager on duty and another employee greet me.

"yo what's up" and I continue past them to the back. Clock in, take off my coat, hit the bathroom real quick. Walk out and the managers at the door.

"Why are you late?" "I was right around the lot, the last light in wouldn't change at all, it slowed me down" "Ok, just letting you know, that this is your last shift, and you didn't even call ahead to give us any notice. That's just really disrespectful. It was 5:05 and not even a call or text to tell us you'd be late." ".....ok?" "Yeah, so I already found coverage. You can leave." "alright?"

and thus, ends my seasonal job at Zumiez. Drove about an hour out to the mall, just to be told to leave, and that someone was already called in to cover me, as I'm standing in the store.

Just to be told to leave after I had already clocked in and after my manager clearly saw me all the way in the front of the store AND greeted me, and didn't want to stop me way ahead of time and tell me to go home right then and there.

Wouldn't recommend this job to anyone. Shit management, shit communication, and overall just a shit environment.

Back to my main job it is, and I am perfectly fine with that. Definitely glad that I turned down a sales associate position that was offered to me.

Fuck Zumiez.
