I need some career advice and I'm not sure where to turn. I'm a US federal government employee and I have worked for 10 years for the federal government (6 years of private experience before that). I work in a technical field and I have skills that are very sought-after. Pair this up with my TS SCI clearance, years of experience, certifications, and I'm constantly being head hunted by recruiters. I make a little over $120,000 a year currently. Within fifteen years I should be making slightly over $150,000 plus COLA increases (easy to determine career pay for a federal employee). I live in a very low cost of living area and I'm in the top 4% of earners for my state currently. I've been offered $180,000 a year to do an easier job than I do now in the same field while staying in my current location as a contractor. All my benefits will be roughly the same, the only thing I lose will be my pension. I plan to work for 22 more years. I factor that my pension benefits in 22 years would be about $50,000 a year (plus COLA) from retirement until death if I stay in the federal government and retire at the age of 62. My question is should I take this new job that comes with a $60,000 a year raise at my age of 40 and give up my pension or stay? If the new contracting job goes away I could easily stay in my current location if I took a 40k paycut down to $140,000 (still more than I make as a govy but no pension). I would definitely have to move to make close to the 180k I'm being offered, but I understand the cost of living in most areas is way higher than here so I'd probably be taking that $140,000 job instead of moving. My wife is a teacher and can get a job anywhere. It seems stupid not to take the $180,000 job, but the long-term security of the government position as well as my pension has me second-guessing myself. Just wanted to ask if anybody had some insight that might make me feel better.
