Hi Reddit,
I am currently employed by a large company in the UK, in a role that I have no interest in. I don’t plan on leaving the company due to the fact that it’s the best company I’ve ever worked for, I love the company culture and the benefits are pretty great.
The company always seems to have a high demand for high technical roles - java &, software developer’s, various engineer roles. The roles always go external as they are never filled...they are always recruiting externally for them.
These roles just so happen to be the exact roles that I have wanted to get into since my studies. I’ve always had to stick with other non-technical roles due to not meeting the requirements. I am never going to get into any of the technical roles that I would like to, such as software development without leaving the company to first gain the working experience- the whole catch 22 situation - How do you get the role without the experience.
Voluntary work experience isn’t an option due to time constraints - working hours, commute times (I have a long daily commute) and personal.
I’m therefore planning to email my current employer basically explaining the above - that they have a demand in software development roles for example, that it’s something I’m interested in but would be unable to get the experience without leaving the company and can I request an apprenticeship.
I mentioned the UK as I know there are various government schemes. I’m late 20’s and I think an adult apprenticeship scheme would be perfect - I’m not concerned about the drop in money. The company has an education team that delivers training to those looking to progress in areas, but currently does not cover IT. They have invested a lot of time and money into me so far with training and qualifications, which I could mention.
How do I go about this? Sorry for the long winded post but I need some advice on how it is best to go asking about this.
Please advise :) !
