Will more retail and supermarket job vacancies open up after Christmas?

I work at an Asda and I'm the new recruit there (only been working since November). I'm 17 and have only entered the jobs market so that's why I'm posting here. An older colleague told me that people often leave after Christmas and that there are normally vacancies opened to fill their places.

I was wondering if this is applied to the whole retail industry, e.g. places like Tesco and Vue will also experience employees leaving. I was wondering if there is a general reason why people choose to leave.

Also, I want to know from your experience if there is actually an increase in vacancies for part-time work or work in general at supermarkets and the retail sector around this time of year or in January.
