Ever since the beginning of this year, I've been looking at possibly getting a chance to interview for a job I really want. I'll explain.
I sent my resume to the owner of this small business after hearing from both receptionists that she may be hiring another receptionist. She told me that she wasn't hiring at the moment, but would keep my resume on hand. I basically forgot about it.
This past summer she emailed me asking about my availability and some other job related things so that we could set up an interview. I admittedly took a few days to respond, as I didn't see it while at a conference. She never emailed back.
One of the receptionists again lets me know she may be hiring soon, and would bring up my name at the appropriate time. I wait a while, and ask the receptionist for updates twice. The first time she tells me she still needs to wait to bring it up, because it would have to be after explaining that she needs to work less hours. The second time she tells me the owner already hired someone else. I don't know if this receptionist ever actually brought up my name, honestly.
I'm unhappy at where I work now, so I recently decided to shoot the owner another email, because I honestly think this job is a great fit and it's higher paying than most other jobs like it. I also texted the other receptionist if she knows if there's any openings, just because I wanted to find out quick if I should look elsewhere. She never responded.
The owner responded really quickly to my email and told me that she may have an opening once the receptionist I texted goes back to school, so she would try to find out her schedule. I went ahead and emailed back what my availability would be in January, but that I could change it if she needed me to work different hours. She told me she would get back to me ASAP. It's been 4 days and I haven't heard anything.
So, at what point should I stop bothering with trying to get a job there? This job is definitely my first choice, but should I take this trouble so far as a sign to look for work elsewhere? I don't want to nag the owner or receptionists anymore for updates. When should I officially give up on hearing back from them? A week?
My thing is, I don't want to get a job somewhere else and then finally hear back that she wants to interview me. But I definitely don't want to wait until January when it'll be pretty clear if she's not interested.
Also, is there something I could have done better throughout this? I wonder if I did something to put any one of them off, but I'm not sure what.
