Transitioning from full time work to consulting

FYI cross-post from another sub.

Hey guys,

I've been offered a position that is clearly defined in terms of the results and duties expected, but it's been presented in a way that offers me a few options.

It's worth noting here I have a full time job to consider alongside this.

The position has basically been communicated as a 6-12 month hired gun job. I'll come in, do the work that is expected of me in the timeframe, and exit the business.

I can choose to do this however I like:

1) Full time - move across for 6-12 month fixed term contract

2) Work in a consulting capacity a couple of times a week, and potentially balance this with my current role (that would also need to move to part time)

The main thing I'm wondering is can any of you comment around the second option? Particularly regarding the conversation with your current boss, and how you would bridge moving your full time role into a part time consulting role?

The first option is clear to me. I'd leave my full time role, work at this new role for 6-12 months and look to secure something for after that during that time.

The second option isn't clear. What are my best bargaining tools for convincing my boss I can do my current job in a part time capacity?

Also, what is the rule of thumb for what I would charge both parties? I've understood it as twice your hourly salary?

I'm considering the move to consulting/contracting work as I'd enjoying my diversity in my work, working on different projects in different industries, with clear expectations and a clear job to be done.

Love to hear your thoughts and thanks in advance!
