New job offer - considering two options for start date

I obtained a job offer and I have been giving two starting dates - January 7 or January 22 since that is when new-hire orientation is. I am coming from out-of-state and there's no relocation reimbursement. I am having a hard time choosing a start date and I have to give a firm date tomorrow. The recruiter I talked to said the department were expecting me to start on January 7th but I can still choose between the two. I don't want to make this hard on myself and want to keep a good impression. I will need to find an apartment to live in this high COL area.

If I choose January 7, I can crash at my friends place for the week until I find a place.

If I choose January 22, it gives me more time to find a place, mentally prepare, and load up a rental truck and drive it to the new place.

Can I get some advice on what to do here? I know this problem is extremely small but I am getting really nervous (maybe cold feet) moving to a new city on such a short time frame.

I am really familiar with the city so there is no problem with that. I have already chosen the neighborhoods where I would potentially live. It's just a matter of finding a place and figuring out the logistics of moving.
