Is spec work for a TEMP interview normal?

My department has been going through layoffs and our (mostly contractor, normal in our function) team is not long for the company. So I am looking again.

One firm has brought me in for 1/2 hour phone screen, two hour-long interviews, and now wants me to do about 8 hours of spec work on very tight turnaround... to wait a month to start working there IF I'm selected.

Frankly, I don't have the time to do the project fully in the time they allotted (I have work and family obligations, and a very tight next couple days) nor do I want to basically give them a day of free work for nothing. I'm concerned that doing so would set a bad precedent that I don't respect my own self, time, or boundaries, and that's not a message I need to be sending. Too many people in my field are sniveling and subservient, and they've completely destroyed an entire industry by having no damn backbone.

Also... this is a CONTRACT job. As in only for 6 months.

It's a great company that I'd love to be an EMPLOYEE for... I don't think they do this for their perm roles though.

How would you all proceed if you were me?
