Okay, so I’ve worked at the same company for the past few years. It was my first real job out of Uni. I learned a lot, it got my foot in the door but the place was hella dysfunctional. Don’t get me wrong, I had some great coworkers many of whom were smart, talented, awesome people, and I genuinely enjoyed the work I did. But the leadership was horrible, lots of bad decisions, executive in fighting and managers with unchecked egos and/or chronic laziness/complacency. It got to the point where the organizational mismanagement started preventing me from performing my job duties, so I decided to polish up my resume (not to mention, the company started having serious financial problems and layoffs were beginning).
I started my new job a few weeks ago. I was really happy to be move on at first...but I’m already starting to see some behavior from my manager that makes me nervous.
I thought things would be different in a new environment. Maybe I’m just jaded and raw from my last experience -it was really bad at the end (I used to spend every lunch break crying in my car).
I’ll admit, I’m not always an “agreeable” person. Im a designer - I take pride in my work and really resent managers who ask me to cut corners in order to “produce.” Additionally, I usually report/ am accountable to people who are not designers and ask me to do things that I know go against best practices.
I don’t want to be a negative Nancy, but I feel like I’m never going to find a job where I feel respected.
...Honestly, at this point, I don’t even care about respect, I just don’t want to feel exploited or humiliated again.
I don’t have a lot of experience to compare to, so there is the chance that things will get better later in my career (maybe I just can’t see the rainbow beyond the clouds yet?)
What do you all think? Am I being too negative? Do I need to lower my standards? Or is this just how corporate jobs are and i should work on accepting it for what it is?
