Difficulties to abandon my major/passion to get a job

I have always been passionate by sciences and had a lot of interest during my studies. After that I got the opportunity to work for two years in a field related to innovation, r&d and sciences.

I have been unemployed for 1,5 years and realize that I should look at a job in another field. I could apply to job related to banking and insurance for instance. But at the same time I have no interest in it.

What is the most suitable strategy ? Concentrate on skills rather than field ? And continue to interest my self with reading on my free time ?
