Anyone else notice this “Overqualified Cycle” trending in the job market?

Jobs that I’m qualified for are being filled by those who are over qualified, resulting in me accepting positions that I’m over qualified for, thus taking away jobs from individuals qualified at that level as well.... and so the cycle continues.

As a recent Bachelors degree graduate, I’m looking for appropriate jobs to advance in my field while making enough money to at least pay my rent/bills/student loans. However these jobs either require WAYY too much experience for an entry-level or above job or, if they have decent requirements listed, they will choose an overqualified candidate instead.

I’ve experienced multiple times that after interviewing for a position that I clearly meet requirements for, they call back explaining they are moving forward with other applicants/decided on someone with more experience/training/education. Sometimes They will even say: “It was really close! The Hiring Manager said great things about your interview, but at this time we are going ahead with an applicant with more experience. You can always try again in the future!”

Job requirements of a bachelors degree and 1-2 year experience are being given to those with MANY years experience or who have a masters degree...

So now I’m only getting job offers for positions that require a high school degree and/or just a year of experience when I have a Bachelors and 3+ years in the industry under my belt. Which now takes away jobs from individuals who don’t have a college degree or as much experience and so on...

Any one else noticing this specific trend at all? Any thoughts on why this is happening or how it can be fixed? I’m wondering if it’s due to advancing technology which reducing the number of positions within companies, or even just the higher number of applicants who have degrees?

I’m hoping that by taking a lower level job, I can just use my social networking to advance within the company as time progresses. Otherwise I feel as though I don’t have a chance with some of the positions I’m applying for.

This cycle is sad and needs to be addressed... especially as our population just continues to grow and grow :(
