Should I mention that I am studying for something that could help me get a promotion within work?

I had a meeting today where a team I work with is having issues completing a task. It is an area that I have been training for outside of work. I was thinking of leaving the job. However, this possible opening or opportunity is having me reconsider leaving right away. It could be a good learning experience. There is no official position but they think their might be one in the future. How should I tell my boss that I might be open to this? The new position sounds way better than my current one.
