Should I follow up with recruiter on Linkedin after applying?

Hi so a while back I heard at a job fair that it is extremely important to message recruiters from the company at which you applied to on LinkedIn. Does anyone agree with this statement?Basically I found a job that I was interested in and I applied online via their website, I went on LinkedIn and looked up the company / employees and found a "premium" member whos title says recruiter. Should I email them saying "hey I applied for this job, these are my qualifications, kthanksbye?" I should note that I have had no previous contact with this person or company so it kinda feels weird even though I know I am doing their job by contacting them.
