I’ve been working retail part-time at my local mall for nearly 3 years now, it’ll be three years in December. I enjoy the job despite originally wanting to leave at the two year mark. Workload is low and overall it’s a pretty laid back place. I wanted to leave at the two year mark but I was so comfortable that I stayed.
Things changed around the beginning of September, one of our coworkers left and our company doesn’t offer our position anymore(key holder). Instead they’ve opted to hire two new workers who can’t close or open the store. There are currently 4 key holders, 2 of us are students who mainly have availability to close, while the other two only ever open. So for the past two months I’ve been working 5 days a week with little to no time to go out and do video projects and stuff for class. My car is also starting to mess up and I can’t get it fixed cause I don’t ever have enough time to get it fixed cause I have to be at work. I’m a full time college student and I feel as if my part time job is controlling my life much more than my schooling is. Also I realize how good I have it to be able to complain about something like this.
I have people who have applied/could replace me. With each new weekly schedule I want to leave more and more. Constantly seeing that I work 5 days is killing me and my grades. I asked one of my older coworkers about this (what I should do) and she said she supported any decision I made. But she also said that it wouldn’t really be that fair to leave during this time since the holidays are coming up.
I have nothing against my coworkers, I wouldn’t even be in this predicament if our company would just hire another key holder. My manager (the 4th key holder) just had a week vacation and is coming back this weekend. So we’ve only had 3 key holders for a week. I have 4 to 5 months of bills saved up and I want to put in my 2 weeks in as soon as possible. How should I go about the talk with my manager? Should I feel bad for leaving at such an important time?
