Backstory: The last I talked to my MIL it was Mother's Day, May 13th, 3 days after my DD was born. She said that a post of mine on the book of faces broke my FIL's heart (my DH and him weren't talking), and I was so rude, and she never wants us to contact them again, blah blah blah "Have a Happy Mother's Day, I guess". We have been NC (no contact) ever since and we don't miss them. If it's important, the post had nothing to do with them and didn't mention them at all, but she assumed I was INTENTIONALLY leaving them out, which I wasn't. Trust me, she's just crazy. Did you catch that I had a 3 day old baby when she brought this drama? Yeah...
ANYWAYS! Flash forward...Last week, I interviewed for a new job in County Department A, and County Department B sends a hiring manager because they also have an opening for the same position. NBD, I just want a job. HOWEVER, I had a second interview today with the Lead from Department B and they are VERY interested in me considering to work for their department instead of the one I initially applied for. CATCH: MIL would be working in the same office as me, she works in Department B.
First, when (if ever) should I mention this to the hiring manager? A question on the application asked if I had any relatives working for the County, and I disclosed that my MIL works for Department B. However, it has not been brought up in the interviews. We share the same last name.
Do I invite MIL for coffee and try to smooth the waters? SURPRISE her on the first day? Send her a cordial text about not needing her to like me to work with me? I just don't know if she's the type of lady that could remain professional if we continue not to talk to each other. What do you think?
