I am currently a mid-level manager at a small retail store, and have been one for almost a year. I enjoy my job, but I want to move to upper-management. I am trying to prepare for the conversation about this with my boss, and I would really like some help?
I do almost all the same duties as upper-management, and Im not looking for much. I am efficient, reliable, and always looking for ways to improve. Things were not the best in my department when I came in, but I have worked hard to fix things, and seek improvements wherever I can. I have recieved many raises, and have had great employee reviews. I have kept track of extra achievements that have benefitted the store in preparation.
Being a smaller store, they do not have many workers, and I find myself taking more and more work over from various departments. It definetely feels like there is an incongruence for what I do, and what place I hold at the store. It seems like they value whos been there longest, rather than personal value, when it comes to upper-management. They also make it very clear to us that they strongly dislike asking for advancement, it must be earned.
I am not sure when the best time to approach my boss on this would be, and how to deal with things if the answer is simply "you have to be here longer" or if I am rejected for another redundant reason. I am currently training many new hires, and am the only one who fully knows how to do my job. Should I wait until they are trained fully, or sooner because I would be more invaluable? I dont want to threaten them and have them resent me for trying to force them to give me a promotion, but this is something I really want. What should I do?
