Let go 7 days into a new job, have never been fired before. How do I explain ?

Long so feel free to skip ahead but this is a first so I wanted to get it off my chest!

I left a relatively comfortable (but underpaid) semi management job for another opportunity I found through networking. The company actually approached me (wow!)

I spoke to the owner on five occasions (both phone and in person). It seemed like a great place to work, the team was “like family” and there were good benefits. The other two people in the “department” where I would be working had each been there 20+ years (so they were obviously happy). It was impressed upon me that they were looking for someone who would be a good match and move on to management as the other two employees retired. the owner and I had a great impression of one another. I hadn’t worked in that industry before, but the role was similar enough to what I had been doing. The owner wanted to take on someone younger who would learn the technical aspects of that field and stay on long term. I felt confident that I would learn and was really excited to find a long term role with a clear trajectory.

For the first four days, I was told to “just observe ”. I didn’t really receive any “training” per say, I just watched Employee A. When asked about what they were working on, or if they could show me something they usually didn’t respond, or seemed irritated. I got the same when I asked if there was anything I could help with. I thought it was odd, but chalked it up to them being busy, or a hearing issue. The other Employee B was much more helpful but very busy so I didn’t see them much.

On day 6, I was brought in for a meeting with the owner and Employee B where I got some feedback. I let them know that I thought the feedback was helpful, and that I would also like some more instructions (since A didn’t want me watching over anymore). We came up with some training materials to review in the downtime and resolved that Employee A would give more direction. I let them know that I felt confident that I would pick things up as I got more acquainted, and came away feeling the conversation was productive.

On day 7 the owner asked to speak with me. Employee A had written a page of mistakes I made over the past few days. Several of these were to the effect of “Witchscree didn’t know and asked me how to do X” I was really surprised, and explained that I had completed X, but asked A to check that it was correct before proceeding. I’m big on feedback, as we had discussed just yesterday. The rest of the items were technical aspects which I hadn’t been trained on. I expressed that if someone would have pointed these out to me at the time, It would have been a great learning opportunity.

The owner let me know that while he personally really liked me, A and B had made up their minds that that they didn’t have time to teach me, and that i wouldn’t be cut out for the position.

I was shocked since I had taken the job with the understanding that I’d be trained for the role, and left my previous to do so.

I’ve never been fired before and I don’t know how to explain to prospective employers why I’m available. I also wanted to ask my old boss for a reference since they were happy with me. But since I left them for this job which didn’t work out, I’m not sure if it’s okay or how to explain. Thank you for your help, and sorry for the long post!
