How to ask for increased flexibility and even more part time hours?

TL;DR How can I ask my boss for flexibility in hours that are probably not the greatest for the business and likely less hours when he probably needs me for more?

I have a small child and after my maternity leave I returned to work part time. The nature of the work means I often work longer hours a few weeks of the month then close to no hours the remainder of the month. This makes it difficult to find daycare since we can't afford to pay full time hours for the month when we don't need full time care the whole month.

For reasons I am not going to get into, my husband and I feel our child is no longer safe in their current daycare. I have been trying to find another arrangement but have had no luck. At the end of this month they will no longer be attending their current daycare. If we can't find daycare, I need to have increased flexibility for hours and be able to work from home more (with, let's be realistic, probably less hours since my child requires a lot of monitoring). If that's not possible, then I will have to quit.

What is a good way to say this all to my boss? I feel terrible because we are a very small team and I am basically the coordinator for everything and have my hands in all aspects of the projects. If I have to quit my boss is screwed but I also don't know if he will be able to agree to what I need.

I really love my job but I don't know what to do. What would be the best way to approach this?
