I am a journalist and I live in New England, but I apply to jobs all over the country (and sometimes outside of the country) because, given the state of journalism right now, you can't just walk out of college with a four-year degree and into the nearest daily newspaper. You have to go where the jobs are.
That being said, how less likely are employers to consider me if I live a good distance away from them? I always make sure to indicate my willingness to relocate if given the opportunity, but are companies turned off by my location because they'll have to provide relocation assistance, or wait for me to clear my lease at my current apartment or whatever else may hold me up? And if I am offered a job for which I have to move, what is a good timeframe to give them between hire and start date? (For what it's worth, I currently have a tenant at will lease, so I can leave once I give my landlord 30 days' notice.)
