So after my summer internship ended, the place I worked at hired me for part-time work. The job was remote which was great considering I'm a student, but for the work I did they paid me peanuts.
I got a call from another place which is a sort of competitor considering it's also a new-ish software startup run by students. They want to hire me for twice the pay (which is still not AMAZING, but acceptable considering my circumstances). I'm considering leaving my current workplace, even though they've been good in everything except the salary.
Firstly, should I expect my current workplace to make a counter offer? If they match the new salary should I consider staying or should I expect them to go higher than what I'm being offered? Or is it more like a personal question, and has nothing to do with the pay.
Secondly, I'm in the middle of a project in the current company. I'm the dude who's worked on it since the beginning, and only one intern knows a little bit about the code. I would say it's gonna take at LEAST one more month to finish. How do I make my exit if it comes to that? I know I can just get up and leave legally because I have signed absolutely NO paperwork. But the people there are nice, and I want to know how to handle this ethically.
P.S. I know some of the stuff these companies are pulling is shady (i.e. signing no paperwork) but I'm at a brand new software house run by students in a developing country, I would say that isn't unusual.
Edit: Also the new employer also wants to see some of the work I've done to better judge my abilities. Problem is, most of the "impactful" work I've done so far is on clients' projects through my current company. Am I allowed to show them what I've worked on?
