I had an initial conversation with the HR person at a company today after applying last night. They want to hire someone ASAP, and asked if I would be able to travel in tomorrow for an interview. The thing is, I live and work three hours away currently and it would cost $100+ for me to get a last minute train ticket to make the sudden trip in.
I asked if a video call would suffice if I am unable to come in. They said it would, but in person is preferred so as to speed up the process since interviews won't be possible next week. Might be worth mentioning - if I got this job, I would be working remotely at least for a few months until I am able to relocate.
I'm trying to figure out if it's worthwhile to spend the money, ditch work with no notice, and go in for this interview tomorrow. I don't want to hurt my chances at the job (although they're trying to hire quickly and I don't think there are many other candidates based on the LinkedIn job listing), but it seems kind of crazy to spend $100 to make a quick trip in for a first interview when it could also be done just as well via video call.
