How do I appease an ATS when my experience is a great fit but the job title is totally different?

My background is in research, both quantitative and qualitative. I run (and have practically built from the ground up) a research and advocacy project that addresses energy use in rural areas. I frequently build and analyze large data sets as well as communicate the results in print and person to drive local governmental action. I write budgets and find grants to cover my projects and can start new projects at will so long as I can fund them.

My title for this role is "Project Coordinator."

I'm currently trying to find a job in a different city and I'm afraid that a difference in lexicon is hampering my search (and possibly my future income). Most of the roles I'm most qualified for are called "Project Analyst" or "Principal Research Associate" and say nothing about "Coordinator." To make matters worse, most "Project Coordinator" positions at the places I'm applying are simple secretarial jobs; scheduling meetings and tracking emails.

So my question is, how do I convince an ATS that I am qualified to be an "Analyst" even though my most recent job title is just "Coordinator?"

tl;dr: How do you rank high with an ATS when your past job titles don't share keywords with the title of the role you're applying for?
