I work in an industry in which we are contracted for stints of time (4-6 months typically), and then are granted 4-6 weeks of 'vacation' after the contracted period before we are offered another contract. Its common assumption in this company that you will be returning for another contract unless you formally resign/termination/give notice prior to your upcoming vacation period, or standard 2 week notice while on vacation.
Im scheduled to go back to this company on November 10th, but have not received and thus not signed the contract for this work. I'm anticipating a job offer this week which I would be accepting if offered, which of course falls inside the standard two week notice window. As I have not formally received the contract offer yet, does my company have any leverage in withholding references/etc if I give them notice this late in the game?
