I'm looking for my first job out of college. I got 2 options I'm looking at:
- I got contacted by a recruiter about a contract job for a year at a subsidiary of a global brand name company. No job description yet but it's in HR.
His sell to me was that I have no experience yet and having the company name on my resume would be good for me later. They could also possibly hire me after a year. - I have a friend who can refer me to a sales role at his SaaS mid-size startup that's growing fast.
I didn't interview yet but I don't think it'll be too hard to get one, and 1 seemed rather in a hurry so I want to evaluate first.
| Company | Global Brand Name Subsidiary | Fast Growing Mid-Size Startup |
|---|---|---|
| Role | Contract for 1yr | Full time |
| Department | HR | Sales |
| Compensation | <40k | 50k + commission |
| Benefits | Basic | Basic + nice other typical startup stuff |
| Commute | 2hrs | 1.5hrs |
I have no prior experience in either, and both fields seem interesting.
From my research I keep getting conflicting views about doing contract work, and the main reason I'd choose it is to get experience (in HR) and for the company name, and maybe getting hired FT. But some have negative views, esp as a first job out of college (will be hard to get FT later, stuck in contract cycle), brand name doesn't really matter for such a short and limiting role, won't be given important work or get recognition for my work, and that basically I'll just be a cog in the wheel for them.
I'm currently leaning towards 2. I'd appreciate advice about entry level contract work, and this situation in general
