Desired salary: From the screener phone call to the job offer.

So I've noticed thru this process for me and a few friends who have recently landed offers, that the offer always goes back to what we initially said during the screening with the recruiter. Then when we go to ask if there is room for negotiations, they reply with "we are already offering a little more than your initial desired salary." Then they give the usual spiel where they figured the numbers and then throw a bunch of numbers for benefits in the position.

Is this common? A negotiation trap? How to handle this situation?

I am not aggressive by any means and honestly happy with the initial offer, but my research has told me they expect u to negotiate.
