I've been at my current company for 16 years and I've worked my way up over the years (so I pretty much only know how this company operates). Three months ago I was promoted from project manager in operations to a business analyst in IT (in ops I worked primarily in IT projects, which is what got my foot in the door to IT). I didn't have any prior formal experience as a BA.
I thought the job was going to be more focused on requirements gathering and documenting user stories and it has ended up with me spending more time basically as a system admin for the systems I support - configuration, help desk support - but I'm still expected to do the requirements and documentation. So much of my time gets sucked into the sys admin stuff and that's just not how I thought I would be spending my time. I could be an actual data config analyst or sys admin and be less ed stressed out because I'm not also responsible for going to meetings and gathering requirements. When I look at BA job postings, many of them imply a level of system administration. So I'm wondering if I misunderstood what the role of a BA actually is. Help please!
