I'm a US citizen working in Canada. QC specifically, the province with a ton of taxes.
I'm currently making $90k CAD which is only about $70k USD ($48k USD after taxes) This is a low salary for what I do, and it needed to change. This salary in QC is great to live on but it's not amazing long term either. I deserve better for what I do so I got myself a few better offers. But, it's remote and I get to pick and choose where to go I discovered. And where I go is where they pay me.
Stay in QC Canada: $100k USD ($65k after tax, $53k after rent)
Move to NYC USA: $195k USD ($125k after tax, $95~k after rent assuming $3k/month worst case for similar space I have in QC)
For reference I asked about LA and they said $185k base.
So it's a $42k USD difference in base salary alone for QC vs NYC. The offer in my field in QC is legendary ($100k USD) without being a senior, but my salary cap in the US would have a lot more growth room clearly. Same goes for bonuses and stock evaluations, this is just base difference.
Sure, cost of living for groceries and overall spending is higher in NYC that will eat away at that but that's significantly more than staying where I am for the same job! Am I crazy? What am I possibly missing here?
And I pay for personal medical insurance in QC anyway, the general "free" one that everyone lauds in Canada is not that great. I'd probably be a bit more reliant on my car but that wouldn't be as necessary if I live in Queens/Brooklyn. So by not taking the offer in NYC, I'm missing out on a significant chunk of money in my pocket huh? I would be stupid to not just rip the band-aid off and move to the city?
