Afternoon /r/jobs!
I recently returned to a previous employer, and my first day on the job my boss messaged me (both of us were in the office) and asked if I would like to lead this project that was coming down the pipe. My former coworker said that my boss had reached out to him a few days before I started, and asked who he should assign this project to. Wanting to work with me, my coworker suggested that I lead it so that we could collaborate. I accepted, thinking that it would be poorly perceived if I had said no, and I felt pressure since we weren't sitting in the room together having a discussion.
After a few days of sitting on it, I finally summoned up the nerve and reached out to my boss. I said after looking into it, it doesn't seem like a good fit for my skills/interests, and that if anyone else on the team should have any interest, they might be a better fit in the long run. I started naming off some other upcoming projects, all of which suit my background, and my boss suggested that we talk in person to discuss, although he did mention he appreciates me bringing this up before the project started. For reference, I've got a LOT of experience in other areas, and we've got several projects coming up, one of which I spent ~6 months reading up on just so I could learn how to lead/implement it. This particular project would have a long tail, and is completely outside of my area.
Any suggestions on how to strengthen my argument? For reference, my boss is a great guy, but very very out of touch with his employees. If you tell him something is interesting, he won't take notice of it at all, and if you wait for him to reach out for a review, it's probably not going to happen. It took a lot of nerve for me to say, "I think I should be assigned to another project", but I don't want him to get the perception that I'm trying to dodge work.
Appreciate any advice any of you might have, if you've been in a similar situation :)
