Looking for some advice here - thanks in advance!
I received and accepted a new job offer last week. The offer letter has been counter signed and is now only contingent upon passing a standard background check. Logically speaking, I am not worried about the background check as I have no criminal history and my employment and edu history is accurate. They’ve also checked my references, which were great.
My start date at the new job is 2 weeks from today. With that said, I am told that timing for background checks is currently longer than usual (COVID), taking up to 2 weeks to process. My HR contact said if it’s not complete before my start date, I can start working in good faith.
I tried to buy some time, saying I would prefer any offer contingencies be met before I give notice at my current employer, but the HR person seemed pretty firm with my start date as they are a growing startup and wanting to staff up quickly. I didn’t push as I felt it might raise a red flag like I had something to hide (she asked if there was something I was worried about). Plus, I don’t want to come across as overly difficult before I even start.
I’m considering giving current employer 1 week notice and saying I’ll be available to help transition past that date in the hopes the check will clear this week (which it might not).
