My husband has been the GM at two major fast food restaurants in the US. His first GM position he was young and relatively inexperienced. He later learned that this particular chain likes hiring young and inexperienced people to run their restaurants, but only after he got his second job. At first he kicked ass. He brought the store back from the brink of death. For the first time in months maybe even years it was turning a profit. But it was so much work, and he had a horribly shitty support system. Basically none at all. Eventually he backslid after a couple of years and was demoted.
He was later poached by a different chain and things seemed so much better. They were more structured and the area supervisor who hired him was very experienced in the field. She was also invested in the stores she was over and was very supportive, but in a somewhat insane and micromanaging way. She was a lot better than what my husband was about to get. They eventually moved her to a different area and put a new supervisor over him. Someone that had never had restaurant experience and only got the job because of who he knew. He was a lazy POS who had no clue what he was doing. Didn’t give my husband the support he needed and that eventually contributed to his downfall.
In the three years that he struggled there he managed to turn the store around as well. Increased profits and traffic significantly. Customers loved him. His problem? The assistant manager that had been there 10 years prior to him. She was notorious for stealing from the safe and sabotaging managers she didn’t like. The ENTIRE franchise city wide knew about her. Yet somehow she was miraculously able to keep her job. He was even warned by his first supervisor that she steals and will cause him to fail his audits when he first got hired! He once caught her stealing and when he showed his supervisor the video evidence he was told to tell her not to do it again. Lol. So why didn’t he fire her? He couldn’t. He was allowed to fire and hire anyone he wanted except the assistant managers. He needed authorization for that.
Over the years this girl spent her entire free time trying to sabotage him. He tried desperately to get someone to listen to him but they refused. They told him “it’s your store. Get a handle on it.” She had turned other employees against him to the point that he couldn’t get help when he needed it. He worked 24 hrs straight on more than one occasion because other managers would refuse to come and help. It drove him to the ER on one occasion from exhaustion and dehydration. He tried finding other jobs to no avail.
There were other employees there that loved him though and they could see the writing on the wall. They also heard a lot of shit. One of them went around gathering signed statements from the others stating what they were witnessing. Before he could even do a damn thing with that he was demoted and then fired. Why? This waste of a human AM accused him of stealing. They didn’t question it. He still tried to present the statements but they were ignored. This all happened at the very beginning of the pandemic. He has interviewed for several jobs after this point and hasn’t gotten a single one. He’s even filled out applications for low level jobs and been rejected.
At this point when he is being interviewed and they ask him why he left his previous job he says he left because he needed a break or he left because I’m sick and he didn’t want to risk bringing the virus home. I am sick and I can’t work. We are struggling and in the process of filing bankruptcy because he cannot find a job and the door dashing and Uber eats isn’t cutting it anymore. I don’t think anyone is believing him when he tells them why he left his previous job but we have no idea what else to say. I’m here because he just got rejected for an assistant manager position that he wanted so badly and I heard him crying from the other room. We also have no idea what other industries he could try to break into but he has tried applying for FedEx and USPS and UPS and other things and he never gets calls back.
We are desperate so any advice will be considered and greatly appreciated
