I burnt out a bit at my previous job and started an office/administrative job at a pretty small sized company. It was really hard to find a job so I sort of just settled
During the 3 month probationary period, they evaluated us every week which is fine but I wasn’t aware companies could do this weekly.
-when we ask questions about pay (for ie: if they didn't pay an hr bc they made a mistake) boss gets angry
-not allowed to make a single mistake and always asked why we made the mistake which is fine but if we answer the question, they keep asking why?
-heard her raising her voice at other new employee
-bringing up a mistake from 2 months ago when I first started training even if we already spent the last week going over that mistake for an hr+ (phone call where i took customers cc# and when i call it back out to confirm, i missed 1 number but in the end of the call got the correct info..)
-heard her calling another employee incompetent to other manager (clearly audible) infront of everyone
-says I make up excuses when they ask me a question/for my feedback
-says im slow (?) not even my work but just says im slow
-one employee spoke up during a meeting and said that it was possible that the manager miscommunicated some info. to us. Later, they called this employee in and told her to apologize for embarrassing her
-manager says I communicate very poorly and that I should not speak like Im talking to my friends (Ive maybe jumbled my words once or twice but 95% of the time, customers are always thanking me for my help)
-if we make a small mistake (after 2 months of working) they say it’s a company loss and get very upset ($5 dollars worth)
This morning they called me in and said they wanted to end my contract and to pack my stuff and leave. I tried to speak to them but they said they don't want things to get uncomfortable. I told them no, I’m going to say what I need to say (a lot of the reasons they were firing me were strange). I mentioned the way they communicate and speak to employees is condescending and unprofessional.
I know this is my first job and I am aware I could have worked at a slower pace/made some mistakes so I was hesitant on speaking up (also b/c future employer might call them) b/c I didnt want to come off as a whiney child. But I said everything I needed to say and in the end they never apologized (wasn't expecting) but just said they acknowledge the fact that I thought I could have been hurt by them…(?)
A lot of these are clearly not normal behavior or is this how some companies/office settings work? At my previous job, I was recognized and acknowledged for my work and liked by my supervisors so this was a very odd but then again it is a different environment. So yep I got fired after 3.5 months. After the 3 month probationary period, they said they want to renew the contract and wanted me to work with them. 2 weeks later, they fire me.
The only reason I’m upset is that I was planning on quitting last week so I could get my paycheck but basically they fired me before I could get to it and leave on my own. So i feel like i was fired by this company upsets me…haha
I guess I’m mostly venting/seeking validation and trying to see how mistakes are handled for new employees at other small companies. Im also looking for tips on how to speak to my future employee regarding this job b/c I am planning on putting it on my resume but don’t want them to call. I appreciate your time and honest feedback!
Thank you!:)
