Hi everyone, in a bit of a tough situation and seeking some advice:
I was offered a 6-month contract with a very small (5 employee) local non-profit organization. I actually declined the initial offer because it was extremely low but their Managing Director (whom I never spoke with before) reached out and indicated how much they want me, the potential of the role becoming full time and asked me to give a figure that worked.
I provided the range I was use to making and they were able to get approval from their board of directors to increase the monthly salary by 37% (the bottom of the range I gave). I started less than three weeks ago and I enjoy the work that I am doing, the team has been nothing short of great!
My dilemma however, is that I have just received an offer from a company I interviewed with prior to starting with this non profit. The offer is for a full-time position with a better salary and amazing benefits (of which I currently receive none). After much consideration I have concluded that at this point in my life, unfortunately, stability and being able to meet my financial obligations currently outweigh me working to make a difference and loving what I do. The pandemic really took a toll on me and I have only had temp contract work for 6 of the last 16 months. Regardless, I decided to accept the offer and now need to tell my current employer.
I feel awful for so many reasons, not only because they went out and got the additional salary but I would be leaving so soon after just starting and as mentioned it's not really any fault of theirs. Making matters worse is technically the person I am 'replacing' just went out on maternity leave for a few months (after training me) so I'd be leaving somewhat of a gap to fill.
I am actually willing to offer to continue working with them in a reduced capacity as a consultant or even as a skilled volunteer (pro bono?) but I am trying to figure out the best way to word this simultaneously whilst resigning from the position. I will be giving the requisite 3 weeks notice stated on my contract but wonder if this is something I should even offer or just move on. The non-profit world in my country is extremely small and my current boss is very influential. It's an industry I would love to return to once more stable and I would love to continue working with this organization on the side (if they are even interested in that).
Sorry for the long post but any advice on how best to break the news and any points to bring up (or not) in the conversation/email is greatly appreciated!
