College graduate with no relevant work experience seeking a job in a new city… it’s a long shot, I know
I graduated with my BA in English the winter of 2019–right before the pandemic hit. I’ve been looking for jobs in publishing, HR, PR, and in libraries since, to no avail.
I originally pursued a degree in English and Secondary Education, only to find that teaching was not at all what I thought it would be—2 months before I was supposed to graduate. Thankfully, I had enough credits to finesse an English degree, but I took on no relevant internships while I was in school because I was student teaching (which was sort of an internship).
That being said, I’ve been working part time jobs in retail, food service, childcare, and customer service since I was in high school. I’m currently employed part time at a bakery, since that was all I could find in the midst of the pandemic. The job is tolerable, but certainly not what I would like to do forever.
I also have aspirations of moving to NYC, one of the two major publishing hubs of the world (London is the other, in case you were curious). Even if publishing isn’t the industry I end up in, NYC is where I want to be. The problem is that I have no personal connections there, so I couldn’t stay with someone temporarily while looking for jobs out there.
So, my questions are: 1. How can I break into an industry with a vague English degree? Internship? Master’s degree? Or something else I haven’t thought of? 2. How can I find a job in a city that I don’t live in? I’ve heard that hiring managers throw resumes without a NYC address in the trash—is that true?
Thank you so much for your time and help!
