Why was telling the prospective employer I wanted to get a degree "bad"?

Had a phone interview today with a prospective employer as a legal assistant in a small law firm. Everything seemed well from my application/emails. Then the actual call come and as I was explaining what I wanted out of the job, which was to commit to it as a career/experience and that I was working towards a paralegal degree, the person interviewing me seemed disappointed.

They told me that they were looking for someone to stay with them for a very long time, which seemed weird to me because I had literally just told them that I was in it for the long haul and wanted to do more than just stay for a few paychecks and make a solid career out of it. I could hear in the tone of their voice, they wanted to end the call as quickly as possible.

I'm very confused, my experience was relevant to the job and I expressed interest in working with them as a career. What did I say/not say for them to immediately lose interest?
