Unemployed for a year. Just had a crazy 3 weeks. 2 jobs wanted me to start on the same day.

Here's my story. I got laid off from my job of 13 years at the end of March 2020. They lay off was not due to covid (my last day was actually the same day as the cares act was signed) and we all knew it was coming. Things looked good as we had a union meeting a couple months before the lay off occurred and they told us not to worry the economy was "booming" and jobs were plentiful. I even had a job lined up through a friend. Then covid hit. Jobs disappeared. Anyways It was a solid union job but the company I worked for decided to sell the company and the new company laid off all of the union employees (the other other half was warehouse/front office jobs who eventually all lost their jobs months later). I go on unemployment and applied to literally hundreds of jobs. A year goes by and my worry intensifies, will I ever find another job?

Then comes April 2021, I start getting new interview requests after months of nothing. I go to an interview on Monday April 5th and it wasn't my best interview and I'm a little rusty. They owner offers me a job anyways and I accept it, a position as field service technician. Literally ZERO benefits. Just the standard 1 week vacation after one year of service. Absolutely nothing else. I had no choice to accept. I call on the 6th to tell him I accept and he tells me great just go to this urgent care center by the end of the day for a drug screen and I'll call you when I get the results. No problem. An hour after I get off the phone I get a call from a another potential employer, he asks me some basic questions and wants to set up an interview.(later that day I go take the drug screen for the other place and pass no problem and the first company says great you can start Monday April 12th ) I tired to get in to the new place for an interview that day but they were busy so we schedule it for Thursday April 8th. I go to the interview and it is by far the best interview I've had in the past year of searching. I even told him in the interview that I had already accepted an offer and was due to start next week but told him they were my preferred place of employment. When I get home I get a call and he says "Hey we just sent over this assessment test in an email, take it and we will get back to you". I take the assessment and submit. Also this position is the same as the other, a field service technician.

Friday morning I get a call and he says "Hey we just sent over an email with an offer letter. Take a look and review it and sign it and send it back if your satisfied". I sign the letter send it back, it has 3 contingencies... pass a drug screen, background check, and physical. Also, did I mention this job offers 2 weeks paid vacation after 90 days, paid holidays, sick leave, fully paid health insurance, dental, vision, the whole 9 yards. Best benefits package I've would ever have had before. Then comes end of the day Friday and I get another call from the new place and he says "Hey I just talked to HR and she said you can go ahead and start Monday the 12th if you want". I'm sort of hesitant and tell him about the contingencies in the offer letter I just signed. I make the incredibly difficult decision and tell him I will go into the other job starting on the 12th bc I cannot risk going from having 2 jobs (that both want me to start on the same day after a year of searching! Fml what are the odds!) to having zero jobs. I explain to him until the contingencies are met I will continue at the other place. He understands fully and I start the other job on Monday.

That first week communication is slow with the new job and he keeps sending me messages asking about if I have received information for the clinic for drug screen and physical. Finally I get information on Friday the 16th and I have until April 23rd to go and get everything done. Here's the kicker, the clinic I'm supposed to go to the hours have changed from 8am-5pm. The current job my hours are 8:30 to 4:30 making it incredibly difficult to get in. I do a couple dry runs before and after work and even go in to the clinic and ask them for paperwork to prefill out and they tell me that for a physical/drug screen in the afternoon I need to be there by 4 but if I want I can get in by 4:45 if its just for a drug screen and physical you can do in the morning. Well the information sent to me was for just a drug screen. No physical is even needed even though it says that in the offer letter contingencies. Anyways I manage to leave work at exactly 4:30pm (on 4/20 of all days for a drug screen lmao) and luckily the clinic is only 10 mins away. I speed there after work and manage to get there in time. I take the drug screen and told to wait to hear from the employer. I finally hear back on 4/23 that I passed and he asked me when was going to be a good day to start and I ask if Monday May 3rd is ok and he says yes that will be fine. End of day Friday I end up working late and get back to the shop after the owner is already gone so I call him and leave a voice mail saying to call me back when you get a chance. He finally calls back and I explain to him that I got an offer somewhere else and I'm going to take it. He actually says he's happy for me and I tell him I can work until next Friday if he wants ( I've never not put in a proper 2 weeks notice before so I felt a little bad but this was a unique situation and I had only been there for 2 weeks) he says he'll take me for one more week.

Also the current job is a franchise with only 5 employees including me. The new job is a huge company with 7000+ employees nationwide.

Anyways that is my story and today was my last day at the current job and I start the new job on Monday! It has been an extremely chaotic and nerve-wracking 3 weeks but everything worked out. For anyone who is out of work just hang in there and something will eventually come up. Hiring seems to be coming back full force and just have patience.

Edit: In this past 3 weeks I also had 3 other interview requests and went through with one of them but I didn't want to get into all that as well. Sorry if this was long but I thought I'd share as I'm excited and relieved this is all over and wanted to give hope to anyone struggling to find a job. Thanks for reading
