This one's a bit of a novel; please hang in there.
I interviewed at my place of employment for a position for which I have a degree in June of 2019. At the time the best they could do was $3000 less than I was asking, which wasn't enough. They then offered me another position that paid the amount I was seeking, so I figured I'd give it a try (I've been working in my field with my degree for decades at that point, and thought it might be interesting to try something different).
In July of 2020, they canned a whole bunch of us due to Covid, and I was called back in October to the same position. In December, they asked me to move into the position that I have my degree in, as they were very short handed and I agreed. Note, they kept my salary at the same rate, but said they would probably reduce it back to the original, $3,000 lower salary come June. My response was we would discuss it when the time came.
Well, the time has come. I have realize I LOVE doing what I have my degree in and do not want to go back to the other position. But I cannot afford a pay cut. I've double checked the average salary for my position on the Bureau of Labor site, and what I'm asking for is still less than the median pay. Thing is, I'm not very good at verbalizing when there is conflict.
So I need some phrasing and suggestions on how to get them to understand that it behooves them to continue me in this position at this pay rate; besides the median pay scale, other info that supports my case is the fact they already do not have enough folks in my position and are actively seeking more, and I have yet to receive a raise, even a cost of living.
Oh, and as for looking elsewhere, it's somewhat difficult in my area. We have 2 localish community colleges which offer a program in my degree, so there are a lot of people looking for these positions in this part of the state. I could make lots more if I moved away, but I'm tied to this area due to my son's custody agreement.
