Hey Reddit, I just wanted to make a post regarding my experience so that just in case someone does a google search for these emails or contacts, I could save someone the hassle of getting strung along.
TLDR; Applied to Upcast Social a MediaMath company for a UX position through LinkedIn and it turned out to be a scam. Was emailed by a bunch of people I couldn't find through a google search and just wanted to warn others.
A job I applied to on Linkedin emailed me from this address recruitment@careers-mediamath.com with the name Jeffrey Gerald a "Talent Acquisition Specialist" from MediaMath regarding the application and stated that I had a Screening Test/Interview already scheduled early the next day. At this time I thought it was odd but was really looking forward to finally landing an interview.
I was told to email this email: lizbutler@careers-mediamath.com and add this email lizbutler.hrbp@gmail.com on Google Hangouts before the interview to confirm my interview time. From here on out however most of my correspondence was with the Gmail account, which is another red flag.
There wasn't an interview however and it turned out to be a 2-hour written test with questions you could find online when you look up "[Insert job title here] interview questions". After submitting I was told that
Our team will review your answers and will forward to the hiring board for their decision and I will get back to you with feedback from the board's decision in about a couple of hours.
And they did get back a couple of hours later telling me that I was to:
Before you start work, you will receive a payment(check) which will be used to set up your mini office by purchasing the office equipment and software applications needed to start your training and work.
This was where my sirens started going off
Playing along however because I had thought that my intense self-doubt was just making me feel super anxious about the fact that I could actually land a job. I did a google check for Lisa Butler and Jeffrey Gerald under MediaMath or Upcast social which was another odd note I made.
I was instructed to send some personal info including home address to jobs@careers-mediamath.com to start the onboarding process, turns out to be another email for Jeffrey Gerald, which I was a little suspicious about. When I emailed that address I was notified to email a different address a Mr. Justin Wehner at services@eddverify.org.
From that email, I received a daily suspect-looking EDD "Employment Eligibility Verification" form that requested my social security number which was for me the final alarm I needed. I had been dealing with EDD for the past year and few months to know well what an official EDD document looks like. they also claim to be the actual EDD for some reason
Employment Eligibility Verification Team
EDD.
This last email also gave me actual phone numbers for people to contact
If you have any questions or any aspects you do not understand, please call Christopher Wade on (408)409-6859 or Justin Wehner on (323)999-4113
and with a quick google search found that those numbers were both VOIP numbers
With almost 90% certainty that I was being strung along, I found this thread which detailed an almost replica of my situation which just confirmed my doubts. In the thread people who were further in the process detailed receiving fake checks that they were to cash in, etc.
This is just a warning and to be on the lookout for these kinds of scams and that LinkedIn really needs to do a better vetting process before these postings could be put up.
