Do you think it's harmless to lie about the length of time you've known someone on a reference?

This isn't my situation just to be clear and I know lying on a resume or reference is bad bad bad. I am just very curious what others opinions are about this.

That's the only thing being lied about. Just the length of time the person has known the other person. I know it's illegal to give a false reference but this isn't actually false... the ONLY false part is that the length of time they've know each other is exaggerated a lot. I assume the responses will be "just don't lie period" but I'd actually like to hear input if this is a big no no or if it's maybe not a big deal.

And if it's deemed a huge deal from any responses I get I will talk to this person about it and try to make them see this isn't a good idea.

Thanks reddit :D
