I was given the opportunity to interview for 2 completely different roles at the same company. Made it all the way through to the end, and now I should start hearing back from the company as to which position(s) they would like to offer me. I want Job A and have decided against taking Job B if that ends up being the only one they offer.
The recruiter asked me which position I preferred, and I told him Job A. Instead of telling me where I stand and whether I will be receiving a job offer, he countered with “well, would you take Job B if that was the only option?”
I’m nervous because I have no official offer on the table right now, and feel like they’re trying to see if I would take the “worse deal,” as in, maybe the position that is more difficult to fill, which I believe is Job B.
I want to respectfully decline while still showing my interest in Job A, but want to go about it in a sensitive way.
Does anyone have any advice? Has anyone run into this before?
