Nearly a year ago I was hired by a well known company for a entry level position. The company wanted me to start immediately but I asked for a week as to give my employer at the time some space to find a replacement, I often wonder what would have happened if I had just started right when they wanted because my start date was then pushed back twice before I was called by the HR representative who told me that all start dates company wide had been put on "Pause" because of the Covid- 19 pandemic. This was in early March in NYC and as such I completely understood the reason for this happening and held no malice towards anyone. I made sure to ask the HR representative if that was a pause rather than a recension of the position to which she was very honest and told me that is was just a "pause" but had never seen anything like this situation in all her years and could not be certain how things would be moving forward.
From there it was radio silence until November when I tried to reach out to the HR Rep and did not get a response. I then directly emailed the person who would be my direct supervisor (The person who i interviewed with) and he thankfully got back to me after a few days to tell me that the position is still on pause. Although things looked bleak at the time I took that information as a win because I figured that if the job had been scrapped all together then that would have been the perfect time to let me know. The fact that it was still paused after all that time made me think that it was still a possibility.
I signed employment paperwork and was all ready to start my employ when this all started but because I did not actually have that first day I have been in limbo. I am not furloughed and so any of the benefits like health coverage are not in play for me.
Now with the one year anniversary of my start date(s) coming up, I'm wondering what to do. I want to reach out again but I also don't want to be a seen as annoying to them, I have done some freelance work in the meantime to make some money but would be nervous if getting another full time job might effect my employment with the company, and I do feel like the company owes me a Duty of Care of some kind even if its communicating with me more than they have or keeping the promise of employment as I did leave my last job for them.
Any sort of thoughts of guidance would be greatly appreciated as I am really unsure of what to do or even think about this situation as it is.
