Fraternization

My girlfriend referred me on at her company over a year ago and we both still work there. During the interview process they even brought up how we were dating and how she’d be able to help answer questions for me and make starting a new job easier if I were to get it. I got the job, she got a nice referral bonus, and we were told that all was good, but we just wouldn’t ever be able to work at the same store together.

Fast forward now almost a year and a half, we’ve both been promoted a few times but seem to be at an impasse. We’re both almost ready for our next promotion, but corporate is saying that we won’t be eligible because even though we’d still be at separate stores, if one of us got promoted it would violate their fraternization policies. We’re upset and confused and are trying to see how this is just now becoming an issue even though it never was in the past. Any advice?
