Asking for a job reference

I recently left my job on good terms, but I forgot to ask my supervisor to be a reference. I asked my coworker to be my reference and he said that it’s against company policy, and that only our supervisor can be a reference. Also, that all my supervisor will say is “yes she worked her from (date) to (date).”

So is asking for a reference even worth it? If they won’t say anything about my work ethics, would they even be helpful to the interviewer?
