People who have worked their way up from basic entry-level jobs, how'd you do it?

I'm talking bottom of the barrel fast food, retail, etc. How'd you get to where you are today? What's your story?

I sometimes feel as if there's a lot of negativity in the sub, and understandably so! But I think it would be nice for people with worries and less than fortunate circumstances - especially in this economy - to have something to hold on to.
